We highly commend your church’s effort to start or restart its Missions Team. This new team refers to a specialized group under the church's leadership that helps manage and promote global missions ministry in and through the local church. We are so thankful to God that we’ve been able to help churches work through this process. God has used it to revolutionize how they think about missions and become outstanding in church missions ministry. In Part I, we summarized three prerequisites and three initiating practices.
In Part II, we will consider some foundational concepts that shape the direction, scope, and boundaries of the Missions Team's ministry.
- Foundational Missions Team documents:
- The charter or organizational document. The Missions Team has an agreed-upon purpose and leading role in mobilizing the whole congregation in world missions.
- The Missions Team has a recognized membership and rotation of terms.
- The Missions Team has an agreed-upon means of funding and budgeting.
- Missions has clear definitions and processes for the financial stewardship of missions resources on behalf of the church:
- A biblically sound definition of missions and the focus of your church’s missions goal/s.
- An application and approval process for missionaries or ministries that clarifies their alignment with the church’s doctrine, practice, and ministry focus, as well as prioritizes their relationship with the church.
- A developed (or developing) pathway for missionary candidates to become qualified and recognized to be sent out from your church.
Would you like an objective way to assess what your church is doing in these areas? The Church Missions Profile, built on interaction with churches that have excelled in missions ministry, is one such way. Here is the link to access this self-assessment in twelve areas of church missions: (https://sendforward.org/store/church-missions-profile/).
